FOURTEEN

The next thirty minutes are the most harrowing of my life. I should have asked Danny more questions. I consider calling him back, but at the same time I don’t want to know.

I don’t want to know because I already know. Deep in my gut. It’s the baby. It has to be. She wouldn’t have left the award show suddenly for any other reason. And since whatever happened landed her in the emergency room, there is a very good chance that the situation is bad. I’ll deal with it, and I’ll be who and what I need to be for Sabrina. But knowing this might be the last half hour where I can be excited about fatherhood, then I’d rather stay in the dark.

Who knows? Maybe it will be something else entirely—appendicitis or a kidney stone or chest pain or a seizure or a severe allergic reaction—

I refuse to think more about the possibilities or else I’ll spiral. Instead, I concentrate on weaving my way through traffic, pretending my only reason for rage is the road.

Finally, I’m at the hospital. I leave my car parked in the circle drive without talking to a valet. If it’s been towed when I return, so be it. I’m too desperate to find my wife and be at her side to care about something so trivial as an automobile.

Inside, I consider blowing past the emergency room desk and searching for her myself, but one look at the stern-faced security guard on duty, and I decide I’d better play by the rules. Thankfully, the ER is only moderately busy, so it’s only another fifteen minutes—fifteen long-ass minutes—before it’s my turn at the desk.

“It doesn’t look like she’ll be admitted,” the receptionist tells me as she reads her screen.

Somehow, I manage to keep myself from reaching over her desk and turning the monitor toward me so I can read along with her. “I need to see her,” I demand.

“I understand. I’m just looking to see if she’s authorized you to go back.”

I almost lose it right then and there. If she’s suggesting that Sabrina doesn’t—

“Ah, there you are. Donovan, you said, right? She’s asked to let you back when you arrive.”

I let out a slow breath, feeling a relief that’s hard to acknowledge considering how fucking tense I still am.

“Let me get someone to take you back.”

I stop the receptionist before she picks up the phone. “Just tell me where she is,” I practically beg. “I’ll find her.”

She has pity on me, and a few seconds later, I’m buzzed into the secure area. I don’t even have to look at the numbers outside each curtained area to find her because Danny is standing in the hallway.

I practically run.

“She’s okay,” he says as soon as he spots me coming toward him. “I should have said that on the phone.”

The knot in my chest loosens ever so slightly. “Why aren’t you in there with her?”

“She’s…it’s…” He shakes his head. “It’s private.”

My knees weaken. It’s as I’d thought then. Without thinking, I reach out to something—anything—for support.
