FOURTEEN
The next thirty minutes are the most harrowing of my life. I should have asked Danny more questions. I consider calling him back, but at the same time I donât want to know.
I donât want to know because I already know. Deep in my gut. Itâs the baby. It has to be. She wouldnât have left the award show suddenly for any other reason. And since whatever happened landed her in the emergency room, there is a very good chance that the situation is bad. Iâll deal with it, and Iâll be who and what I need to be for Sabrina. But knowing this might be the last half hour where I can be excited about fatherhood, then Iâd rather stay in the dark.
Who knows? Maybe it will be something else entirelyâappendicitis or a kidney stone or chest pain or a seizure or a severe allergic reactionâ
I refuse to think more about the possibilities or else Iâll spiral. Instead, I concentrate on weaving my way through traffic, pretending my only reason for rage is the road.
Finally, Iâm at the hospital. I leave my car parked in the circle drive without talking to a valet. If itâs been towed when I return, so be it. Iâm too desperate to find my wife and be at her side to care about something so trivial as an automobile.
Inside, I consider blowing past the emergency room desk and searching for her myself, but one look at the stern-faced security guard on duty, and I decide Iâd better play by the rules. Thankfully, the ER is only moderately busy, so itâs only another fifteen minutesâfifteen long-ass minutesâbefore itâs my turn at the desk.
âIt doesnât look like sheâll be admitted,â the receptionist tells me as she reads her screen.
Somehow, I manage to keep myself from reaching over her desk and turning the monitor toward me so I can read along with her. âI need to see her,â I demand.
âI understand. Iâm just looking to see if sheâs authorized you to go back.â
I almost lose it right then and there. If sheâs suggesting that Sabrina doesnâtâ
âAh, there you are. Donovan, you said, right? Sheâs asked to let you back when you arrive.â
I let out a slow breath, feeling a relief thatâs hard to acknowledge considering how fucking tense I still am.
âLet me get someone to take you back.â
I stop the receptionist before she picks up the phone. âJust tell me where she is,â I practically beg. âIâll find her.â
She has pity on me, and a few seconds later, Iâm buzzed into the secure area. I donât even have to look at the numbers outside each curtained area to find her because Danny is standing in the hallway.
I practically run.
âSheâs okay,â he says as soon as he spots me coming toward him. âI should have said that on the phone.â
The knot in my chest loosens ever so slightly. âWhy arenât you in there with her?â
âSheâsâ¦itâsâ¦â He shakes his head. âItâs private.â
My knees weaken. Itâs as Iâd thought then. Without thinking, I reach out to somethingâanythingâfor support.
